Landschaftlich erstreckt sich das Bundesland von der Altmark im Norden über die Magdeburger Börde und das Harzer Mittelgebirge bis hin zum Thüringer Vorland. Die Elbe fließt durch Sachsen-Anhalt auf einer Länge von 303 Kilometern.
Die Einwohner von Sachsen-Anhalt heißen historisch korrekt Sachsen-Anhalter, das entsprechende Adjektiv ist sachsen-anhaltisch. Daneben wird aber in der Umgangssprache auch die Bezeichnung Sachsen-Anhaltiner und der im Duden verzeichnete Ausdruck sachsen-anhaltinisch benutzt. Prickelnd, herzhaft und malzig schmecken drei der Markenprodukte aus Sachsen-Anhalt, die über die Landesgrenzen bekannt sind: Rotkäppchen, Harzer Käse und Hassröder. Die Nahrungsmittelindustrie hat sich zum umsatzstärksten Wirtschaftszweig von Sachsen-Anhalt entwickelt und ist einer der wichtigsten Antreiber des wirtschaftlichen Strukturwandels. Mehr als 19.000 Menschen arbeiten in diesem Industriezweig.
Magdeburg ist die Landeshauptstadt von Sachsen-Anhalt und hat nach Hannover den zweitgrößten Anteil an öffentlichen Grünflächen im Stadtgebiet. Auch ein Gebäude in Magdeburg ist besonders grün: Die Grüne Zitadelle ist das letzte Architekturprojekt von Friedensreich Hundertwasser vor seinem Tod. Das etwa 90 Kilometer südlich gelegene Halle/Saale ist eine Stadt der Kontraste: Gründerzeitvillen mit Holzbohlen und Stuck wie im Paulusviertel stehen nicht weit entfernt von Plattenbauten in der Neustadt oder Silberhöhe. Die größte Hochschule in Sachsen-Anhalt ist die Martin-Luther-Universität in Halle mit etwa 19.000 Studenten.
